Recommended List of Supplies for Improve Your English 123
In addition to a calendar or appointment book, you may need other supplies to help you succeed in your English classes. Also, you will want to keep your notes and assignments organized, because you want to be ready to learn!
- Journal Notebook – A soft-bound composition notebook (with double-sided, ruled* pages that CANNOT BE easily removed), used for your research, notes, and questions for Your Teacher. An ideal size for your journal would be from 5.5"x 8" (140 x 203mm) to 7" x 10" (170 x 245mm) with about 100 pages. Composition notebooks can be purchased for under 5 dollars.
- Loose Leaf "Filler" Paper – Double-sided, three-hole punched** ruled paper either 8" x 10.5" (or A4) sized sheets, for taking notes during class, during research and writing assignments. A package of 150 sheets can be bought for around a dollar.
- Folders – You can keep your notes, assignments and other papers in folders with pockets. You can purchase these cheaply in most stores. You can also use a ringed binder for your note pages.
- Index Cards – 3" x 5" (76.2 x 127 mm) ruled cards on which you collect words, expressions, and other research about English. Cards can be purchased in 100 card packs for about a dollar each.
- Sticky Notes – Little sheets that can be applied to a book, notebook, or other printed material in order to make a temporary note that can be removed later. Sticky notes or "Post-It®" notes use a special adhesive that will not damage library books.
- Pencils – We should write in pencil in our notebooks, school books and assignments (0.5mm mechanical pencil is preferred). You may want to underline in your books, but NEVER use pen. For notes during class, we highly recommend that you write in pencil. For assignments, we also ask you to double-space*** your writing.
- Highlighters – You can use highlighters when reading magazines, newspapers, workbooks, and printouts. The best colors are yellow, orange or light blue. You should NOT mark your books with highlighters, especially if you have borrowed them from the library or from a friend.
Notes:
* Ruled means that a page will have blue lines to help you organize your writing. College-ruled pages are better than wide-ruled because there are more lines to write on.
** Three-hole punched means that paper has three holes on the left margin so that you can insert the page in binder or folder.
*** Double-Spaced usually refers to the width/height between the lines you write on. If you handwrite your assignments or use a word processor, please double-space your assignments so Your Teacher can make correction notes more easily.
